How To Make Perfect Dipped Beeswax Taper Candles (In An Old Tin Can)

Home-made beeswax candles are a real pleasure to make and to use - and they make a perfect gift too. Everyone should have a go making them (especially if you have children and/or bees?). The key to doing it successfully is choosing the right containers in the first place. In this case we’re using an old gallon can that once contained wood-preservative. (Cut the top off with a can-opener.) Whatever you choose, it should be deep and straight-sided, or you’ll have to heat more wax than you need to. The outer container just needs to hold enough water to keep the wax melted.
These are cotton wicks - you can get ones made especially for beeswax (but they all seem to work). Keep the wax just above melting point - any hotter and you’ll only have to cool them more between dips. Or wait longer.
Purists among you will say these need rolling - well we like them with the odd wrinkle. After all, they’re home-made and they should look it. If you want them smoother, just roll them between wet, flat boards while they’re still warm.
And if you want them parallel and not tapered, you’ll need to turn them upside down half way through the process (why would you bother??).
These are available now in our online emporium

I apologize for the exact question (at the bottom of such a creative video), but I wonder how much time is spent on making such candles ... and of course, I am delighted with what you are doing I live in a big city and I think people forget and sometimes even feel shy about such activities Now you can buy everything. As a rule, what is sold is cheaper and has a more beautiful look. but How valuable that you do!

Sorry, Gretchen. I have no experience of pre-waxed wicks, so can't help you there. The width of the wick is up to you - the thicker it is the bigger the flame, but the quicker the burn. I think I'm using a 2mm one? Something like that anyway.. Have fun!

Thanks again for your video. I have now made almost 60 candles, but today I noticed I was getting little pin holes on the surface of the candles when pulling them out of the wax. I tried manipulating the temperature but didn't seem to make any difference. Any ideas what is happening or how to stop this from happening. The wax is about 160 Fahrenheit and since I am using a gas burner inside a small room in a barn, with windows open, I do get a lot of condensation so wondering is water has anything to do with the little pin holes? Thanks for any help with this. Amy

what happens when the wax gets low in the can? You need a large volume of hot wax to dip the full length. Do you just make shorter candles?

Acum 2 ani
DrMAULAF

Thomas Gordon you could probably fill some molds with the liquid wax or fill jam jars with with the wax and make some small candles.

cooling with water can and usualy always will cause sputtering. this is when the candle burnes water trapped in the instant cooling process. it then snaps and crackles and sometimes sputters out.

Acum 2 ani
David Graff

well if your guna wait for the wick to dry then you don't need to use water... lol

Acum 2 ani
Way Out West Blow-in blog
Way Out West Blow-in blog

I'd disagree, David. No water gets trapped in the wax - it's just the wick that gets wet. It will be spluttery until the wick dries but that doesn't take long at all.

Thanks for your video. I watched your video months ago and finally have all my supplies and am going to do this this weekend. But now I read about using oils mixed with the beesewax? But those examples were poured into mason jars. Would you or have you ever mixed the bees wax with coconut oil? I think this weekend will be one of experimentation. I am so excited. Any ideas about adding oil much appreciated.

Acum 2 ani
Robert Frase
Robert Frase

I attempted to use scented oils in beeswax candles years ago - and it didn't work well. Nor did attempting to add dye to the beeswax in order to change from its natural orange color. I could only add a final few coating dips of scented/dyed paraffin wax. Also, the key to bullet tipped tapers is to dip the candle at the same exact spot over and over until the final 2-3 dips where you dip slightly past the top. I was most successful at selling my bleached beeswax candles. A beautiful ivory white.

Acum 2 ani
Way Out West Blow-in blog
Way Out West Blow-in blog

I haven't ever used oil in candle-making, so I can't advise you there, Amy. Sorry. (I think the real beeswax smells perfect on its own)
